Runners warm up to prepare for the Wilkes-Barre Half MarathonWilkes-Barre, PA – The Wendy's Wonderful Kids Half Marathon and 10K Run was held September 4, 2010, at River Commons Park and throughout downtown Wilkes-Barre. The event raised $5,000 to support the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption's local Wendy's Wonderful Kids (WWK) program at the Children's Service Center of Wyoming Valley.
to raise money for local children in foster care.
The event was produced by Wilkes-Barre Racing, a non-profit organization dedicated to using athletes and athletic events to promote foster care and adoption. "The support of local businesses, volunteers and athletes far surpassed anything we could have hoped for in a first-year race," said Rich Pais, Wilkes-Barre Racing event organizer. "Breaking even is a great accomplishment for any first-time production, but to be able to donate $5,000 and fund more events next year is unbelievable," Pais said. "The effect is still being felt as we get calls and offers of support from businesses and individuals who are just now discovering the reality of kids who need forever homes."
Sponsors included Wendy's, Sneaker King, Sundance Vacations, Independent Graphics, First Liberty Bank, Wet Paint T-Shirts, Martz Trailways, Tree Web Design, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Youth for Christ and Bonner Chevrolet.
Wilkes-Barre Racing plans a return of the WWK Half Marathon and 10K Run next year. It also is creating the Pocono Xterra Trail Run Series, which will include five trail runs from 5K to half marathon distances. Age group winners will qualify for the Xterra Trail National Championships in Bend, OR.
